Operation Romulus

6-7 November 2021: Combat Mission, Catterick OBUA

Location: Sirte, Tripolitania, Libya

Since the evacuations that took place in July as part of Operation Empire, Azearian State forces have made significant advances in the countryside surrounding Sirte, increasing the number of areas it controls.

As of October, the majority of British and American nationals have been evacuated but some areas of the city remain cut off. Sirte is still effectively under siege and the battle for the citadel continues.

Private security contractors and JCTSF personnel remain in the city in an attempt to stabilise the situation but Azearian State militants roam the streets in execution squads, hunting down remaining foreign nationals.

On October 21, 76 people including the twelve attackers were killed in an AS bombing and shootout just outside the citadel. The Libyan National Army (LNA) connected the attack to an “influx of militant reinforcements arriving from Chad”. LNA spokespersons have also attributed the swift AS advance to the “destabilisation of security” caused by the Second Libyan Civil War.

With Azearian State reinforcements closing in on Sirte, facing little to no resistance from the LNA, it will be up to the small contingent of JCTSF and PMCs to continue the evacuations for as long as possible. Time is running out.
