Operation Red Wings

16-18 April 2021: 3-Day Combat Mission, The Trees
Location: Korengal Valley, Pech District, Kunar Province, Afghanistan

Insurgent activity in Kunar Province, Afghanistan is caused by individual groups, from those with tenuous ties to the Taliban and al-Qaeda, to the majority that are little more than local criminals. These groups have become collectively known as anti-coalition militia (ACM).

HUMINT and SIGINT have indicated that Ahmad Shah, an aspirational and extremist leader of a small cell of Taliban ACM, operates out of the small village of Chichal, on the slopes of Sawtalo Sar mountain in the Korengal Valley.

Shah seeks to impede upcoming elections and attempt to aid a resurgence of the Taliban in the region. His cell is also directly responsible for multiple incidents against coalition forces and Afghan forces, including small arms ambushes and improvised explosive device attacks.

Operation Red Wings is intended to disrupt local insurgent activity, counter Shah’s operations, and contribute to regional stability.

UAV footage has identified likely structures Shah is using for housing his cell, IED making, and overwatch of the area below, for IED strikes. CJSOTF-A has occupied a small patrol base on the far side of the Korengal Valley to provide direct support for the operation.

Once security in the outer areas has been established, US Navy SEAL reconnaissance and surveillance teams will be tasked to insert in the region of the suspected insurgent activity, observe and identify Shah and his men, and guide a direct action team to structures in which Shah and his men are observed to be staying.
