October 2021: Rebel factions of Ansar al-Sunna (AAS) previously aligned with ISIL forces in northern Mozambique attack government forces tasked with providing security at Minas de Revuboe, a rare earth mineral mine in Tete Province. The rebel attack provokes a brutal response from the FADM, the Mozambique Armed Defence Forces, which in turn escalates violence in Tete townships, including multiple suicide bomb attacks around Chingozi Airport.

November 2021: Rare earth mineral (REM) mines are considered the key to future financial survival of many African nations, as well as those countries that have control over such installations. Following the October attacks, Mozambique’s president Filipe Nyusi signs a coalition deal with Russia to help secure the region against Ansar al-Sunna. As part of the deal, Moscow secures a large controlling piece of the REM industry, establishing Russia as a potential leader on the global technology front.

December 2021: Reports surface of foreign advisors assisting Ansar al-Sunna forces. Masked men coordinating rebel factions are seen on news broadcasts globally, as fighting throughout the province displaces a huge portion of the civilian population.

FADM along with 3rd Guards Spetsnaz Brigade (GRU) engage the rebels, but what many nationals consider as Russian interference in Mozambique, inspires more anti-Russia and anti-Government sentiment.

January 2021: Claims by Moscow that western PMCs are aiding rebel factions in the region are denied by both Westminster and Washington, who counter by recalling Russia’s involvement in the Crimea in 2014 and the deployment of GRU units into Azerbaijan in 2021.
