With the British police and intelligence services overstretched in recent months, the threat of domestic terrorism has increased. The African based Azearian State terror group is known to seek out certain individuals, making full use of social media to glamorise their horrific acts. These individuals may then be inspired to carry out self-organised attacks, which are inherently harder to detect.

On 22 May two males, a 34-year-old and a 26-year-old, whose names haven’t been released by the British law enforcement authorities, carried out a series of knife attacks against crowds of people in Stewart Park, Middlesbrough. 5 people were killed, 13 wounded. Witnesses reported screams of ‘Bism Azear’ during the attacks, and the Azearian State has taken full responsibility for the attack. A representative from the North East Counter Terrorism Unit stated that the men had been under surveillance for some time.

Further intelligence operations have uncovered that the men were part of a terror cell based in Newcastle calling itself ‘The British Azearian Movement’ (HAB; Harakat al-Azearian al-Britania). While many of the members are British recruits, some are known to have returned from Chad and Nigeria, where the Azearian State continues to fight for a caliphate encompassing all of Africa. This cell is now known to be directly responsible for the 22 May attack, and it is highly likely more attacks are being planned. SIGINT has also confirmed that the cell is growing rapidly and potentially being supplied with firearms brought to the coast, financed by means of robbery, extortion and money laundering.

On 28 May several members of HAB carried out a series of violent attacks and robberies across County Durham, using two vans to conduct drop offs. Armed police were quick to respond resulting in the shooting of three suspects in the village of Hackstall. A high speed chase ensued with the suspects using their vehicles to mount the pavements in built up areas. 4 people were wounded while another was shot dead.

The suspects later fled to the small village of Neighbluff, IVO Portfall, where they dispersed into residential and commercial areas and began robbing local businesses. Durham Police and an SFO team from CTU North East have since set up a cordon around the village. With the threat of hostages and civilian casualties high, the counter terrorism contingency of the UK Special Forces is put on immediate standby.
