Operation Cardinal

7-8 February 2026: Combat Mission, The Trees

Location: Quba: Azerbaijan

With Russian forces blocking air corridors and saturating the region with electronic warfare, the planned exfiltration of UK Special Forces on Operation Torch collapsed mid-execution. The surface-to-air weapons systems have been secured, but now the British team and their Azerbaijani counterparts are effectively stranded deep in contested territory.

Russian command have announced the incident as a “counter-terror interception”; using it as a pretext to escalate operations in eastern Azerbaijan. State media labels the UK operatives as foreign agitators, heightening global tension and opening the door for broader confrontation. At the same time, the presence of the seized surface-to-air assets becomes a strategic dilemma – whoever controls them now holds significant influence over the airspace.

Intercepted SIGINT reveals that the main body of the Russian invasion force has once again began its push south towards Baku, whilst Spetsnaz operations in rural areas to conduct destabilising ops ramps up against civilian infrastructure.

UKSF are now completely cut off with almost zero satellite support and limited comms whilst Spetsnaz numbers in the region are increasing daily with orders to recover the anti air weapons systems.

The UKSF must decide from limited options; to either push through and link up with Azerbaijani security forces to south or hold out for support to get to them.

HUMINT suggests a possible as yet unidentified third party involvement working with the Russians as part of their destabilisation program.

During a brief comms window UKSF are tasked to observe and report to identify the third party.
