Operation Arakan

12-14 April 2024: 36H Combat Mission, Catterick OBUA

Location: Duju, Habilah District, West Darfur, Sudan

2023 saw Azearian State rebels from Chad conducted a cross border insurgency into neighbouring Sudan, igniting clashes along the baseline FOBs set up as a joint Sudanese -UK/US Coalition to protect the Sudanese border region.

During several of these border skirmishes intelligence was recovered that confirmed the involvement of Russian PMC Wagner Group assisting Azearian State fighters operating from the Chad side of the border.

The regime in Chad has repeatedly denied claims these rebel militia groups are operating with government authority, and has also denied the employment of Wagner Group in that region.

September 2023 saw a joint operation by UK/US SOF intercept and recover a CBRN weapon from a Wagner splinter group attempting to cross from Sudan into Chad. Their intent was unclear however, UKSF J2 on the ground unexpectedly received direct communications from N’Djamena, granting permission to cross the border and stop the device by any means necessary.

In the first month of 2024 insurgency fighting in Sudanese cities close to Chad border has increased, pushing Sudanese security forces to breaking point. AS have seized control of large sections of urban real estate leaving the civilian population displaced and creating a human rights emergency.

As of 48 hours ago AS rebels seized control of a local government headquarters in the Habillah District taking several hostages including the visiting commissioner of the federal treasury.

HUMINT reports claim a second group of rebels seized control of the regional armoury of the Rapid Support Forces, and it is rumoured the rebels now have control of several surface to air missile systems, along with other conventional weapons.

This obviously poses a clear and present danger to ongoing Sudanese operations reliant on air support, and will have a huge impact on joint operations run with UKSF and its US counterparts from ODA 147.

With this in mind Operation Arakan will launch a ground offensive alongside Sudanese forces to regain control of these systems and restore local government.
