Operation Julius

4-6 July 2025: 36HHR Combat Mission, The Trees

Location: IVO Foro Burunga, Southwest Sudan

In the early hours of the morning, US forces from the 75th Ranger Regiment begin preparations to withdraw from isolated outposts in the volatile border region between Chad and Sudan. Control is being handed over to Sudanese partner forces as the broader coalition consolidates at key forward operating bases (FOBs) to better protect civilians in the border areas.

Suddenly, several remote bases come under sustained attack by an unconfirmed number of Azearian fighters crossing from Chad, armed with mortars and rocket-propelled grenades. At Patrol Base Elizabeth, the intensity of incoming fire prevents helicopter support from approaching the area.

Despite the chaos, Sudanese forces successfully employ artillery to push back the attackers, eventually clearing the way for a Chinook helicopter to attempt a landing and extract remaining personnel. But as the aircraft makes its final approach into the valley, it is struck by RPG fire from multiple positions on the mountainside.

With a helicopter down, America’s worst fears are realised once more. Emboldened by this apparent victory, Azearian militias launch a renewed offensive, seeking total control of the outposts to further their own agenda.

Just a few kilometres from PB Elizabeth, two special operations teams from the US Navy SEALs and UK Special Boat Service (SBS) are conducting missions in the area. Both units are redirected with orders to link up, assist in the defence of PB Elizabeth, locate the crash site, and recover the downed aircrew.
