Operation Hudson

30-31 July 2022: Combat Mission, Catterick OBUA

Location: Mecula, Niassa Province, Northern Mozambique

April 2022. The battle for the rare earth mineral (REM) mines continues. Mozambique’s President Nyusi labels the Ansar al-Sunna (AAS) rebels as a domestic terror group. The exhausted Mozambique Armed Defence Forces (FADM) repeatedly fail to counter the rebels, even with deniable military aid from Russia in the form of ChVK Wagner.

June. With the battle seemingly unwinnable, the FADM rallies local militias and begins utilising brutal COIN tactics in an effort to out the AAS rebels. Hundreds of civilians are killed or executed by their own military. The rebel group begins to disperse to outrun the encircling government forces while ChVK Wagner reportedly head the interrogation of so called terrorist sympathisers.

July. With the civilian death toll rising, President Nyusi declares martial law, blaming the violence on the AAS rebels directly. The Samark Security Group (SSG), a private security company contracted to train AAS, switches their remit to humanitarian operations.

In late July the FADM cordons off the small town of Mecula where SSG are attempting to extract civilians. Military commanders state that Mecula is “entirely occupied by the terrorists”. Artillery strikes become a regular occurence and the civilian population is almost completely wiped out. In a last desperate attempt a small group of SSG contractors manage to extract over 200 civilians via the old rail network. FADM forces close in and the SSG becomes cut off. A siege ensues.

One week later it is revealed that ChVK Wagner have put a price on the heads of the remaining SSG staff. With most of them being either British or American nationals, TF45, JCTSF is deployed to break the FADM siege and rescue the trapped SSG operators.
