Operation Tobolsk

4-5 September 2021: Combat Mission, Catterick OBUA

Location: Ataturk, IVO Balakan, Balakan District, Azerbaijan

Since the beginning of the year, the Azearian State Caucasian Province (AS-CP) has made significant advances into the north west districts of Azerbaijan. With Qakh District already under AS-CP control, their attention has turned towards Balakan District.

AS-CP has been emboldened in recent weeks by the withdrawal of Russian troops from the border regions, taking many strongholds from government forces. The Azerbaijani government has been forced to abandon some district administrative centres, where it could not withstand pressure from AS-CP. Others have been taken by force.

Within the last 72 hours, US led airstrikes have restarted across the district, with regular AC-130 sorties and UAV surveillance picking up thousands of militants dispersing into Balakan.

AS-CP has already established several safehouses and IED factories where their new chemical explosive, TATP(B1), more commonly referred to as the “Father of Azear”, is known to be manufactured. SIGINT has suggested that a former Russian military explosives expert has been recruited by AS-CP to assist in this process.

Activated by the explosion of highly modified Composition B, an explosive found commonly in old Russian munitions, TATP(B1) poses a significant threat, and with Balakan being a large transport hub, distribution to Azearian cells across Europe could begin within weeks.

A contingent of TF Alpha from JCTSF is deployed to Ataturk in the Balakan outskirts where they will rally at an Azerbaijani Land Forces base.
