Operation Barhail

15-16 May 2021: Combat Mission, The Trees

Location: IVO Calayir, Qakh District, Azerbaijan

On 8th January Turkish Airlines Flight TK715 was shot down over Western Azerbaijan during a routine flight from Lahore to Istanbul. All 221 passengers and 13 crew were killed. Contact with the aircraft, an Airbus A330-303, was lost when it was about 40 km from the Azerbaijan-Georgia border, and wreckage of the aircraft fell over a wide area.

The Azearian State (AS-CP) terror group was quick to claim responsibility however it has been widely assumed that the group lack the operational capability to shoot down a commercial airliner. NATO spokespersons attributed the attack to that of an “organised and well-equipped military force” or a “government-backed militia”.

The ongoing crisis in the border regions of Azerbaijan and Georgia has led to the evolution of several militant organisations. Pro-Russian militias operate with complete immunity across the border, and NATO commanders have accused Moscow of formally backing these groups. It has also been rumoured that the Russian paramilitary group, ChVK Wagner, has been deployed to the region, following their intervention in Quba District in April of 2019.

After action reports from Operation Respite, a JCTSF operation at the end of last year confirmed the mobilisation of AS-CP forces in Qakh District, and intel recovered suggested attacks against civilians and military alike. Despite successfully disrupting enemy resupply operations, the leader of AS-CP, Ibn Saleh al-Khattab remains at large, and it is highly likely his cell is preparing for a spring offensive.

In the last 72 hours it has been concluded that TK715 was downed by a surface-to-air missile launched from contested territory in the Qakh District of Azerbaijan. Fighting between AS-CP and Pro-Russian militias continues in the area and Moscow refuses to comment on the cause of the crash, blaming the Azerbaijani government for allowing civilian flights in a war zone.

TF Alpha from JCTSF is once again put on immediate standby, with the mission to retrieve the flight data recorder, believed to now be in the hands of al-Khattab’s cell. Only then can it be confirmed if AS-CP has the capability to launch such attacks, or if Russia seeks to escalate a proxy war in Azerbaijan.
